Life is funny isn’t it? If you would have asked me 10 years ago if I saw myself pursuing a career in hand lettering & design, I would have said no way. I wouldn’t have even been sure of it 5 years ago. But things have a funny way of working out how you least expect.
10 years ago I was a teacher. I had wanted to be a teacher since I was in little. My dream finally came true and I loved it. I taught Kindergarten. I loved working with the little ones. Seeing them learn to read and write- It was so rewarding. I had my first child during this time. And while it was difficult to go back to work, I did because I was so passionate about being an educator. Once my second child came along, something changed in me. I longed to stay home with my baby this time around. I decided to take the next year off and be home with my kids.
Taking that time off changed my whole life. I made one of the most difficult decisions I’ve ever had to make. I decided to resign from teaching and just like that my childhood dream ended. It took me months to make that decision but I knew deep down that it was the right one. My passion for teaching, that thing I thought I would spend the rest of my life doing, had diminished. Why? I still really don’t know. But I do believe that things happen for a reason.
During my time at home, I rediscovered my love of art. Art has been a part of my life since I can remember. From coloring and crafting with my Mom, to taking art lessons-I loved it all. Especially drawing. I wasn’t necessarily into “hand lettering” at the time, but I was the girl who loved writing in cursive and had very neat handwriting. Like the kind of hand writing that people always complimented. So just like that, my passion for art reappeared and I decided to turn it into something I could do at home and earn some extra money.
Fast forward a couple years and here I am, running a successful Etsy shop, inspiring other hand lettering artists and pursuing a career in lettering and design. And I mean a serious career. I recently decided that I want to go back to school to get a degree in Graphic Design. I would love to ultimately design for companies and see my name on products in stores. My passion for lettering and design is so strong and I firmly believe that this is what I am meant to do.
I feel like my life and passions have come full circle. I’ve ended up loving and pursuing my first love- art.
Go for dreams. Don’t be afraid to pursue something that you love (even if it seems a little crazy). Sometimes we have to follow our hearts and see where they take us. Hard decisions are scary (and tough), but worth it in the end if you have the courage to make them!
I hope you will continue to follow me on this journey. Let’s share our love of lettering together! I created this space to share my knowledge of lettering with you. I hope you’ll find inspiration in my tutorials and creative projects and learn something along the way.
