Tombow Tip Tuesday
If you’ve purchased a Tombow Dual Brush Pen set, then you’ve received a colorless blender pen. And your first thought probably was, “What do I do with this thing?”. That’s exactly what I thought the first time I saw one. I was clueless! I started googling and looking on Instagram to figure out what to do with it! So to help you, I’ve put together my 3 favorite ways to use the colorless blender. Once you know how to use it, you’ll love it!
ABOUT THE PEN: the colorless blender is a clear pen. It’s main purpose is for blending. Since it’s clear, it takes on whatever color it picks up on the tip. Like the other dual brush pens, it’s self cleaning. No need to worry about ruining the tip! Just rub it clean on a piece of paper. The tip will get stained but it will always write clear, once cleaned. It can be purchased on its own, as part of the blending kit and comes with the brush pen packs.
1: Two Color Ombre
The first way to use the colorless blender, is to create an ombre effect with two dual brush pen colors.
First step, using a lighter color, letter your word.
Here I’m using brush pen no. 761
Now take your darker color and add just a bit to the top (or bottom) of each letter. I’m using no. 743.
Now, using the colorless blender, pull down the darker color and blend it. You’ll start to see a beautiful ombre effect!
Tip: clean off the tip of the blender before moving on to the next letter. Simply rub the tip on paper to clean it.
Super easy right?! That’s my favorite way to use the colorless blender.
2: Lettering With The Colorless Blender
This way requires the Tombow Blending Palette. If you don’t have one, you can use any other plastic surface such as a ziplock bag or the plastic containter your brush pens came in.
For this technique you’ll be lettering with the colorless blender pen.
Grab some complimentary colored brush pens. I’m using no. 055, 725, 755, 946 — some summertime feeling colors. Rub each color out onto the blending palette.
Using the colorless pen, pick up color from the palette and then write. Don’t be afraid to mix the colors together and have fun with it!
Remember, the tip is self-cleaning. So when you’re finished just clean it on a piece of paper.
3: Another Way To Blend
Here’s another way to blend along with the blending palette. First, using a light color letter your word. I used no. 243.
Using similar colors (no. 373, 452), rub each onto the blending palette.
Using the colorless blender, pick up the colors off the palette and blend onto the word. You can color on the bottoms or tops of the letters- wherever you’d like!
Clean your tip each time and have fun blending the colors!
And there you go! 3 easy ways to use the colorless blender. Which one is your favorite?
