Hand Lettering has exploded over the last few years. You can see it everywhere- from home decor, restaurant signs, murals, logos and advertising, even on magazine and book covers. It’s a nice change from computer designed fonts. Hand lettering is visually interesting and unique. A computer will never replace the feeling of picking up a pen and paper and creating something by hand.
Screens have taken over all aspects of our life. And while our computers and phones are helpful, it’s nice to get away from that at times. Hand lettering is the perfect escape! Here are 4 benefits of why you should learn (or continue) to hand letter.
It’s relaxing
When I first started lettering I noticed the therapeutic benefits right away. As someone with anxiety and ADHD, it offered me a outlet to create a sense of calm. Lettering is slow process, which forces you to slow down and relax. It allows you to get out of your head and focus on creating something. Whenever I’m feeling stressed, I pick up a pen and letter, even if it’s just for 15 minutes.
You’re learning something new!
Even though I’ve been lettering for years, I’m still learning new things! It’s important to continue to stretch those creative muscles. It’s important to engage your brain in learning something new. Stimulating our brains has so many mental health benefits! Lettering presents a challenge- There is always something new to learn. Learning something new makes us happier. It’s also been shown to create a positive impact on our self-esteem and confidence. So whether you’re just starting or a seasoned artist, you should always be a beginner.
DIY at home
One of my favorites things about hand lettering is that I can now DIY my own stuff! From cards to art hang in my home- the possibilities are endless. You can use your lettering to create gifts for friends and family. It adds that special personal touch! And as an added bonus, your friends and family will be so impressed with your new skills! You can even start selling your work if that’s an avenue you’d like to pursue.
Share something positive with the world
When I started lettering, I was so excited (and nervous!) to share my work with others. When I started sharing I started seeing the positive impact I was making! Words have a way of motivating and inspiring. When you share your lettering, you never know who may have needed to read your words. Putting yourself out there is scary but can create a connection with others you never expected!
How has hand lettering helped you? Let me know in the comments!
I’m excited to announce that I wrote a book! The Hand Lettering Workbook is a hands-on book for the art of hand lettering, which includes step-by-step practice pages forming letters of a variety of alphabet styles, from serif to brush script. Then take the basics and learn to connect letters to make words along with embellishing and how to add style to your lettering. It also includes advice on the right tools and DIY projects.
